Brown Foundation Gives $4 million for Aging Research

The Brown Foundation's vision and generosity of $4 million donated to establish a state-of-the-art biomedical research facility for age-related diseases will complement the internationally recognized work of investigators in basic biomedical research at the UT Health Science Center's world-renowned Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies.

In 1998, the Brown Foundation Inc. trustees generously donated $6 million, which completed the $22 million that was needed to build the Barshop Institute at the Texas Research Park.  The Institute was dedicated in 2005.

"As the population of elderly continues to grow, the Brown Foundation's gift is helping to ensure that we have the resources needed to meet the health care demands of our seniors, now and well into the future," said Arlan Richardson, PhD, Director of the Barshop Institute.

"We predict this investment by the Brown Foundation will yield groundbreaking discoveries that begin in the laboratory and translate into therapies that directly benefit elderly patients," Dr. Richardson said.  "In addition, a multitude of training opportunities for young physician-scientists will be available.  Our goal is to be a national model for clinical and translational research and education in aging and longevity studies," he said.  "Improved quality of life for the elderly is our goal.  Entire families benefit from having healthy, active parents, grandparents and great-grandparents in their lives.  The Brown Foundation is allowing us to ensure a brighter future for generations to come."
