Prospective Students FAQ

The application fee for the different programs in the Graduate School varies from no fee (free) to $45 depending on the program. Please consult the table for information on application fees for specific graduate programs.

Completed applications will be reviewed if received by April 15th. However, early review and admissions will be given to applicants that submit a completed application by the priority deadline. See the table for a listing of priority deadlines.

Official scores must be sent directly to UT Health Science Center (SCHOOL CODE 6908) from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Photocopies or faxed copies will NOT be accepted.

Yes, but a complete transcript listing all completed courses must be on file before you will be permitted to register for the Fall semester.

Students will be contacted by mail with a letter offering admission to the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences by the Dean of the GSBS.

No, a master’s degree is not required to apply to a doctoral program.

Official GRE scores will only be accepted by UTHSCSA if taken within 5 years.

All applications are now on line. Students can apply via our website by clicking on the “Apply Online” box on each portal home page of the GSBS website. Instructions for applying are provided on the online application.

Yes, we require all transcripts be translated by providing a listing of all courses taken and the cumulative grade point average.  This information is important for evaluation by the Admissions Committee and is required before an offer of admission will be considered.

Yes, an official transcript must be mailed to the Office of the Registrar in a sealed envelope by the degree-granting institution(s).  It is not required for this copy to be translated by a credentialing company.

The recommendation forms for the following programs are part of the Graduate School’s on-line application system:

When applying, you will be prompted to include the email address of up to FIVE contacts from whom recommendation letters are being solicited. A request and recommendation form will be sent out electronically by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences once the application has been submitted.

Students are required to enroll in a minimum of nine credit hours forboth the Fall and Spring semesters and six credit hours for the Summersemester.

Doctoral students enrolled in the IMGP, Molecular Medicine, and Radiological Sciences programs begin laboratory rotations in the Fall semester of their first year. They are required to rotate through a minimum of three laboratories before choosing a faculty advisor for their doctoral research in the summer of the first year.

All incoming students are required to show proof of health insurance coverage before registering. New students are offered United Student Health Insurance for Medical Coverage through the Office of Student Services. This coverage does not include a dental or vision plan. Students may purchase health insurance through their own carrier.

Students of the IMGP, Molecular Medicine, Radiological Sciences and Biomedical Engineering programs accepted to the GSBS doctoral (PhD) programs are classified as teaching assistants and an employee of UTHSCSA, therefore they are paid a yearly stipend. Students accepted into the master’s (MS) programs may be paid a stipend by their supervising professor.

There are also loans and grants available through the Financial Aid Office. Please refer to the Student Services website to determine if you are eligible.

An Annual Security Report is published by the Health Science Center Police. For more information please contact University Police Dispatch Office at 210-567-2800.

Please refer to the Student Immunization Record for a list of required immunizations and signatures requested by the Registrar’s Office before registering for classes.

On campus housing or dormitories are not available at the Health Science Center; however, the Office of Student Services maintains a listing of housing information and costs near the campus in the Medical Center.

Information on intramural sports, exercise classes and work-out facilities can be found on our Student Services website.

The low cost of living in San Antonio, makes it an attractive place for graduate student.  We encourage you to use the cost of living calculator, to compare standards of living between San Antonio and any other city.

Several apartment complexes are within walking or biking distance of the campus. There are also city bus routes that make frequent stops around the Medical Center that could transport you anywhere in SanAntonio.
