Prospective Students FAQ

  What are the entrance requirements and deadlines for applying to the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS)?
  The entrance requirements will vary depending on your program of choice.  Please refer to the following document for information on prerequisites and application deadlines for each of the programs in the GSBS.
Is there an application fee?
The application fee for the different programs in the Graduate School varies from no fee (free) to $45 depending on the program. Please consult the table for information on application fees for specific graduate programs.
If I miss the deadline for admissions, will my application still be considered?
Completed applications will be reviewed if received by April 15th. However, early review and admissions will be given to applicants that submit a completed application by the priority deadline. See the table for a listing of priority deadlines.
What code do I use to have the GRE and TOEFL scores sent to UTHSCSA Graduate School?
Official scores must be sent directly to UTHSCSA (SCHOOL CODE 6908) from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Photocopies or faxed copies will NOT be accepted.
Can I submit an incomplete transcript with the application for admission?
Yes, but a complete transcript listing all completed courses must be on file before you will be permitted to register for the Fall semester.
If I am an international applicant, where do I find information about international services?
Any questions regarding international services should be directed to the Office of International Services  or contact them by calling 210-567-6241.
How can I check the status of my application?
Students can contact the Office of the Registrar at 210-567-2667 or email gsbsprospect@uthscsa.edu.
How do I find out if I am admitted?
Students will be contacted by mail with a letter offering admission to the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences by the Dean of the GSBS.
Where can I find information on tuition and fees at UTHSCSA?

Do I need a Master’s degree to apply for a PhD program?
No, a master’s degree is not required to apply to a doctoral program.
I took the GRE several years ago.  Do I have to take it again?
Official GRE scores will only be accepted by UTHSCSA if taken within 5 years.
How do I apply?
All applications are now on line. Students can apply via our website by clicking on the “Apply Online” box on each portal home page of the GSBS website. Instructions for applying are provided on the online application.

Where can I get the recommendation forms?
The recommendation forms for the following programs are part of the Graduate School’s on-line application system:
    Integrated Multidisciplinary Graduate Program
    Molecular Medicine
    Radiological Sciences
    Masters in Cellular and Structural Biology
    Masters in Clinical Investigation
    Masters in Physiology
    Masters in Dental Sciences.  

When applying, you will be prompted to include the email address of up to FIVE contacts from whom recommendation letters are being solicited. A request and recommendation form will be sent out electronically by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences once the application has been submitted.

How many semester credit hours are full-time graduate students required to take each semester?
Students are required to enroll in a minimum of nine credit hours for both the Fall and Spring semesters and six credit hours for the Summer semester.
When do graduate students choose a supervising professor to begin their doctoral research?
Doctoral students enrolled in the IMGP, Molecular Medicine, and Radiological Sciences programs begin laboratory rotations in the Fall semester of their first year. They are required to rotate through a minimum of three laboratories before choosing a faculty advisor for their doctoral research in the summer of the first year.
Is health insurance available for students?
All incoming students are required to show proof of health insurance coverage before registering. New students are offered United Student Health Insurance for Medical Coverage through the Office of Student Services. This coverage does not include a dental or vision plan. Students may purchase health insurance through their own carrier.
Do graduate students receive financial assistance?
Students of the IMGP, Molecular Medicine, Radiological Sciences and Biomedical Engineering programs accepted to the GSBS doctoral (PhD) programs are classified as teaching assistants and an employee of UTHSCSA, therefore they are paid a yearly stipend. Students accepted into the master’s (MS) programs may be paid a stipend by their supervising professor.

There are also loans and grants available through the Financial Aid Office. Please refer to the Student Services website to determine if you are eligible.
Is there anywhere that I can see a listing of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences faculty?

How safe is the UTHSCSA?
An Annual Security Report is published by the UTHSCSA Police. For more information please contact University Police Dispatch Office at 210-567-2800.
When do the academic sessions begin?
Please refer to the Academic Calendar for each session.

What immunizations are required?
Please refer to the Student Immunization Record for a list of required immunizations and signatures requested by the Registrar’s Office before registering for classes.
What kind of housing is available at UTHSCSA?
On campus housing or dormitories are not available at UTHSCSA, however the Office of Student Services maintains a listing of housing information and costs near the UTHSCSA campus in the Medical Center.
What types of recreational activities are available on campus, including intramural sports and workout facilities?
Information on intramural sports, exercise classes and work-out facilities can be found on our Student Services website.
What is the cost of living in San Antonio?
The low cost of living in San Antonio, makes it an attractive place for graduate student.  We encourage you to use the cost of living calculator, to compare standards of living between San Antonio and any other city.
I don’t have a car, how difficulty is it to get to the main campus?
Several apartment complexes are within walking or biking distance of the campus. There are also city bus routes that make frequent stops around the Medical Center that could transport you anywhere in San Antonio.
